The softening of league

I’m glad I only have five years maximum left in my playing career because the way the game is headed we are going to be playing bloody Oztag by then.

The sensationalism going on in the media doesn’t help either. I am sick of hearing the terms ‘prowler’, ‘ripper’ and ‘grapple’. What’s next to be added to the vernacular? The ‘torturer’?

Don’t get me wrong I feel sorry for Wingy – but players get injured all the time and Rugby League is a full contact sport.

A full contact sport which has been played the same way for the last 100 years and it’s been popular so let’s stop softening it.

The tackle which popped Craig’s shoulder was one which I have attempted to dish out hundreds of times. If the player is struggling you go in and target the ribs. It’s also a tackle I have been on the receiving end of hundreds of times. It is a part of the game and is not dirty.

While we’re on injuries if I was Ben Ross I reckon I would still be snoring. That hit was sickening.

We had a good win on the weekend. The first half was far from ideal but the way we came back in the second half showed a lot of resolve and was on the back of some Brett Finch brilliance. Maybe Finchy smells Origin around the corner?

I also enjoyed playing fullback and cleaning up a couple of grubbers, although I think it was a case of right place at the right time.

Joel Reddy had one hell of a shiner from the game. I don’t know where he got it but he had to have it cut a few times to relieve the pressure. I also don’t know about comparisons between ‘Rocket’ and I looks wise. The haircut was similar to mine before I shaved it, but that’s it!

Unfortunately it looks like Krisnan Inu could be out for 6-8 weeks after having ankle surgery yesterday to repair ligament damage.

That opens the door for Jarrod Hayne to get back into the team and I expect nothing less than a couple of 100 metre tries!

Speaking of Haynesy, we did an Alpha shoot during the week. So look for us on the cover soon.

My week hasn’t been the best either. I’ve spent a few days in bed with the flu. I haven’t had it for ages and it really knocked me around but I should be right for the game against the Warriors this weekend.

While they are a tough proposition at home, our job has been made easier thanks to the losses of Wade McKinnon and Steve Price who are always two of their best players.

I am a bit disappointed I have to be over there on Easter. Archie is at the age where he is starting to look forward to an Easter egg hunt, almost as much as playing with his trains, but I’ll make sure I take him to the Easter Show when I get back.

    G’day Nathan

I was a bit concerned about the eels go forward last friday night.

No doubt, I think the effort from everybody was tremendous but I felt

we struggled to challenge Newcastles ruck area which inturn made it

easier for Newcastle to defend against Parramatta’s backline manouvre’s.

The couple of times where we did get quick play the ball and our forwards ran hard and straight, we really put the opposition on the backfoot.

From a life long Eels fan.

Just a msg for Timmy Smith

Poor Timmy, i really do feel for him, he was badly scrutinised by the media and i totally support him. I just hope he comes back with a new lease on life, and back to his great football career.

    best wishes.
